Internet & Apps
Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube and most Western services are blocked in China. Plan your connectivity before you land so you are not cut off from maps, messaging and email.

Get a travel eSIM
The simplest fix: buy a travel eSIM before you fly. Because it routes through an overseas network, most eSIMs reach Google, Instagram and WhatsApp without a separate VPN. Install it while you still have your home connection.
Or set up a VPN first
If you use a local SIM or hotel Wi-Fi, you will need a VPN to reach blocked sites. Crucially, download and install it before you arrive — most VPN websites are themselves blocked once you are in the country.
Download WeChat
WeChat is the everything-app: messaging, payments, mini-programs for taxis and tickets, and translation. Many businesses only reachable through it. Set it up and verify your account before the trip.
Apps that work locally
Some tools work without a VPN and are genuinely useful on the ground.
- Amap (Gaode) or Apple Maps — reliable navigation
- DiDi — ride-hailing with an English mode
- Trip.com — trains, flights and hotels in English
- Pleco or the built-in translators — offline dictionary
