A grand loop from Xining around Qinghai Lake and out along the old Silk Road through the Gobi. It strings together China's largest salt lake, rainbow badlands, singing sand dunes and the Buddhist grottoes of Dunhuang — endlessly varied and very doable in a week.

Chaka Salt Lake

Zhangye Danxia

Camel rides over singing dunes to Crescent Lake, and the Mogao Buddhist grottoes nearby.

The mighty western end of the Ming Great Wall, guarding the desert corridor.
Good to know
- High but gentle altitude (~3,200m at the lake) — most people adjust easily.
- Summer is peak season; book Qinghai Lake and Dunhuang lodging early.
- Distances are long but roads are excellent — a standard car is fine.
Getting the car
Start and end in Xining, reachable by high-speed rail and air. Rental cars are plentiful; the loop is well-paved and beginner-friendly for self-driving.
